I see many people ask how a WD My Cloud drive’s media can be played on Apple TV directly but there aren’t any solid and specific answers. Each person recommends a different app or a way of streaming it through your Mac/PC using software.

All of that is unnecessary. I found an easy way of streaming the media (photos, music and videos) through Apple TV 2nd generation without much hassle. I don’t think there is an easy way of doing it with the previous Apple TV generation though.

You can play WD My Cloud media on Apple TV easily

To stream WD My Cloud drive in NAS mode with public shares or even private shares, install the VLC app for Apple TV. It is compatible with tvOS. You can then start streaming right away without anything else needed. Get it here:

Here is what it looks like:

Once you installed VLC on Apple TV, just open the app and if your Apple TV and My Cloud are on the same router, the My Cloud will automatically show up so that you can access it’s public shares and start playing/streaming media immediately.

The great thing about VLC is that it basically supports any media format so you won’t have any issues playing files.

Enjoy using your WD My Cloud with your Apple TV, it’s as simple as that!
